Preparing Yourself for Prayer

There are many ways to approach God in prayer but sometimes it helps to have some key focus points. As you join us in praying for the “Everybody Vision” we want to provide you with prayer tips and insights to help you pray effectively. We will continue to add ideas and thoughts so keep looking back.

A-C-T-S – The ACTS Prayer Model is a tool to help guide you into the Presence of God during your personal devotional time. To use this tool, pray through each section and use the Scriptures to lead you to other passages.

A – ADORATION
Take the time to give God my undivided attention. Focus on Him. Acknowledge who He is. Honour Him. Give Him my praise and worship. Use Bible verses. Use songs. Use words.

“Since God has shown us great mercy, I beg you to offer your lives as a living sacrifice to Him. Your offering must be only for God and pleasing to Him, which is the spiritual way for you to worship.” Romans 12:1

“Think about the things that are good and worthy of praise. Think about the things that are true and honourable and right and pure and beautiful and respected.” Philippians 4:8

“Shout to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with joy; come before Him with singing. Know that the Lord is good. He made us, and we belong to Him; we are His people, the sheep He tends. Come into His City with songs of thanksgiving and into His Courtyards with songs of praise. Thank Him and praise His Name. The Lord is good, His love is forever, and His loyalty goes on and on.” Psalm 100

C – CONFESSION
Take the time to wait on God. Ask Him to show me what is not pleasing to Him in my life. Be still. Reflect. Repent. Ask Him to change you.

“Create in me a pure heart, God, and make my spirit right again. Do not send me away from You or take Your Holy Spirit away from me. Give me back the joy of Your salvation. Keep me strong by giving me a willing spirit.” Psalm 51: 10-12

“If My people, who are called by My Name, are sorry for what they have done, if they pray and obey Me and stop their evil ways, I will hear them from heaven, I will forgive their sin, and I will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14

“Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so God can heal you.” James 5:16a

“But if we confess our sins, He will forgive our sins, because we can trust God to do what is right. He will cleanse us from all the wrongs we have done.” 1 John 1:9-11

Psalm 139

T – THANKSGIVING
Take the time to express thanks to God for answered prayer in my life and those around me. Be grateful for every blessing. Use words. Use songs.

“Give thanks to the Lord and pray to Him. Tell the nations what He has done. Sing to Him; sing praises to Him. Tell about all His miracles. Be glad that you are His; let those who seek the Lord be happy. Depend on the Lord and His strength; always go to Him for help. Remember the miracles He has done, His wonders, and His decisions. “ 1 Chronicles 16:8-12

“Give thanks to the Lord because His is good. His love continues forever.” Psalm 136

S – SUPPLICATION
Resist the urge to pray what I think is needed. Take the time to wait on God. Be still. Submit to God. Seek His Will. Ask Him to direct my prayers.

“Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you.” Matthew 7:7

“Do not worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need, always giving thanks. And God’s peace, which is so great we cannot understand it, will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6

“When a believing person prays, great things happen.” James 5:16b

“If two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 18:19

“I cry out to the Lord; I pray to the Lord for mercy; I pour out my problems to Him; I tell Him my troubles. When I am afraid, you, Lord, know the way out… Lord, I cry out to you. I say, “You are my protection. You are all I want in this life.” Listen to my cry, because I am helpless.” Psalm 142:1-3a, 5-6a
